Restoring coastal wetlands (including seagrass meadows, tidal marshes, mangrove forests, and supratidal swamp forests) is an effective natural climate solution with co-benefits for biodiversity and communities. The “science-practice gap" is a key barrier for upscaling coastal wetland restoration and achieving successful outcomes. This gap may be resolved through development of standardised frameworks for consultation by practitioners before, during, and after restoration work to ensure adequate consideration of physical, environmental, social, and cultural factors that influence restoration success. The freely available Victorian Coastal Wetland Restoration Handbook provides a standardised framework for the practice of coastal wetland restoration in Victoria. It synthesises advice from the academic literature as well as international, national, and regional policies and guidelines to provide a one-stop shop for restoration practitioners in Southeastern Australia. It provides best practice information on planning blue carbon projects, site selection, restoration techniques, monitoring restoration success, identifying funding sources, and navigating permits and approvals. This new tool aims to increase uptake of high-quality blue carbon projects; improve the integrity and reporting of outcomes; and enable their inclusion in State policy documents and strategies. It represents a critical step in unlocking Victoria’s blue carbon potential and repairing the wetlands that once enhanced our coasts.

  1. The Victorian Coastal Wetland Restoration Handbook will be made publicly available in mid-January.
