Decision makers, marine spatial planners and managers and related stakeholders often do not have access to the best available environmental data, information, and scientific knowledge. This can lead to poor decision-making, inefficiencies, higher costs for businesses, and a lack of transparency for the public1. What is currently missing is a systematic approach to transform inaccessible, non-aggregated, hard to find data into accessible well-managed data that can be used in national environmental data supply chains for State of the Environment reports, Environmental Economic accounts, environmental assessments, and the monitoring of environmental trends and outcomes. The IMOS Data Uplift Program and the National Environmental Science Program2 5.9 project will provide the necessary resources to expand the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN) data services by incorporating critical non-IMOS datasets and creating visualisation and subsetting tools as well as aggregated/integrated data products to inform decision makers. The AODN catalogue3 currently documents over 14,000 datasets related to the Australian marine domain and provides links to data access points from various providers, when available. The program will process selected datasets based on the priorities of marine managers and policymakers. Integrating these collections into the existing AODN infrastructure will ensure long-term support.
