The NSW Marine Pest Surveillance Program 2022-26 is a first of its kind for NSW amongst a limited number of other Australian and international examples. Introduced Marine Pests (IMPs) are non-native marine plants or animals that represent a significant biosecurity threat to the social, cultural and economic benefits and are a key stressor on our marine environment. NSW encompasses 28 ports and small harbours and, with the forecasted increase in shipping volume, the NSW Marine Pest Surveillance Program has been put in place to detect potential introduction of marine pests. The Program focuses on active surveillance at the six major NSW ports in terms of international shipping arrivals and high vessel volumes. The Program uses a range of innovative monitoring methods and tools, targeting 21 priority pest species for NSW. Since commencing the program in 2022, the NSW DPIRD Aquatic Biosecurity Programs team has built partnerships for the successful deployment, retrieval and analysis of over 205 samples taken from settlement plates at 14 locations. A combination of Remote Operated Vehicle missions, foreshore walkover surveys and eDNA water samples have also been assessed across the priority locations along the NSW coast. The program, techniques and challenges will be discussed.
