As scientists, we work hard to produce quality research, but our journal articles often have a limited audience of fellow scientists and experts. Simultaneously, we are constantly evaluated based on our engagement and the number of outputs we produce. We would like to share our positive experience in writing an article in language that is accessible to kids and teenagers between the ages of 8 and 15. Our article was reviewed by kids themselves - with the help of a mentor - to provide feedback and explain how they thought we could improve our article. The journal, Frontiers for Young Minds, is open access and has over 33 million views. Our team joined forces to write a scientific article about dugongs and seagrasses, exploring the interactions between dugongs and seagrasses, and covering concepts on indicator species and positive feedback loops. Writing an article for a younger audience can not only help us to articulate complex concepts in simple terms and add to your publication record, but it is also fun to do!
