Designing marine parks that work for both people and planet is a challenging but important task. Whilst the conservation effectiveness of marine parks with high levels of protection (i.e., no-take) have been well established, there is increased recognition that social and economic outcomes of marine parks are important both as drivers of conservation success and as ethical outcomes in their own right. In this live demonstration you will use a social sciences research tool known as a choice experiment to design your ideal marine park, come to grips with the trade-offs involved, and compare your marine park to those of over 2,000 members of the public designing new marine parks on the Great Southern Reef. We will discuss the assumptions involved, areas for improving this method, and management implications of our findings.
