Since 2007, the Integrated Marine Observing System (IMOS) Animal Tracking Facility has maintained a centralized acoustic telemetry database, including movement data from over 14,000 individuals across 180 aquatic species tracked in Australian waters through 171 research projects. The IMOS Animal Tracking Facility also manages a network of 22 receiver installations at 149 unique locations, spanning depths of 3 to 149 meters, which continuously collect detections from tagged animals registered in the database. The success of this national-scale infrastructure depends on the collaborative efforts of researchers to upload raw detection data from all animals detected on their receivers. By uploading their data into the IMOS database, researchers not only extend their spatial tracking coverage beyond their own equipment but also benefit from potentially maximizing the amount of data collected from the same individuals. Inclusion in the IMOS database fosters collaboration among research institutions – either through sharing data from the same species of interest or via combining efforts towards similar research goals. Additionally, the IMOS Animal Tracking Facility partners with the research community to develop and provide open access tools that support streamlined and reproducible data analysis.
