The UMME Sea Alliance (TSI) Corporation Ltd empowers communities of UMME's Sea Estate (Ugar, Masig, Mer and Erub) through sustainable marine resource management, cultural preservation, and education especially through the uplifting of the role of women. The people of UMME are known for their rich maritime traditions, including traditional celestial navigation, marine science, conservation, and traditional hunting practices, which have been passed down for generations, and this deep connection to the sea and natural ecosystems underpins UMME. To create new knowledge and face the current rate of environmental change, the alliance works with trusted partners to align Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), cultural governance and management practices with contemporary science and conservation, creating a best practice framework for the preservation of Torres Strait as a biocultural land and seascape. UMME has established a women’s specialist marine monitoring team, to monitor recovery and health of coral reefs in UMME sea Country which have recently been impacted by Urmemeg (Crown of Thorns Starfish). UMME supports a sustainable future through education and training focused on marine science and conservation, sustainable fisheries, and cultural heritage management. This ensures that local communities lead, drive and manage change to meet their aspirations, for generations to come.
