Wuthathi Aboriginal Corporation has been extremely successful in regaining ownership and cultural authority over its land (Ngaachi) and sea (Karakara) estate in north-Eastern Cape York Peninsula, based on its clear and united vision leading to strong and stable cultural and corporate governance. Wuthathi is now leading the way in Traditional Owner management country where it is co-designing a new and innovative model for co-management of Karakara in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) Marine Park. This model will see Wuthathi function using a business planning and delivery model as a co-delivery partner to shared management objectives under the Reef 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan and its own strategic planning objectives. This partnership with Commonwealth and State joint-management agencies is supported by other co-management programs, including its extensive land and sea Indigenous Protected Area, co-managed National Parks, State and Commonwealth Indigenous Rangers and built and vessel infrastructure to accommodate custodians and operations, and undertake management activities in the GBR Marine Park. With this support Wuthathi is now leading a multi-disciplinary baseline assessment together with some of Australia’s top scientists to determine a long-term monitoring program for its high-value natural and cultural heritage, designed to align with Reef 2050 and its own interests.
